The Governing Body is asked to consider and approve a $25,000 funding request from the Kansas Health Science Center.

In March of 2023, Molly Fox with the Kansas Health Science Center presented plans to establish a Southwest Kansas Medical Education Hub in Garden City at a City Commission pre-meeting. In June of 2023, students participating in the Kansas Rural Medicine Summer Program visited Garden City. 

In both of those meetings, discussions about partnership opportunities were discussed. In an effort to help move forward the Medical Education Hub, the Kansas Health Science Center applied for, and received a $575,620 grant through the Patterson Family Foundation. The grant requires a 100% match and they have requested $25,000 from the City of Garden City. Several other agencies and partners are being sought after to help with the matching portion for the rest of the grant award. 

1. The Governing Body may approve the funding request of $25,000 for the Kansas Health Science Center. 
2. The Governing Body may not approve the funding request of $25,000 for the Kansas Health Science Center. 
3. The Governing Body may provide staff with alternative direction. 

Staff recommends the Governing Body approve the funding request of $25,000 for the Kansas Health Science Center. 

If approved, this would overspend the Social Funding line (10077171-6641) in the General Fund by $25,000 and would use fund balance.  The 2023 Revised Budget allocated for Social Funding is $46,500.
